CASE STUDY: OVER-ABSTRACTION OF GROUND WATER IN INDONESIA (BGR)
|
Objective of the project
The Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR, Germany), Geological Agency (Indonesia) and Altamira Information have collaborated to analyse ground motion in Semarang, Indonesia. This analysis was necessary because a large subsidence phenomenon in the city of Semarang -due to its coastal location- has led to increased flood risks. |

Analysis and results
Subsidence analysis has been conducted in two time periods: 1996-2000 and 2002-2006.
Due to over-abstraction of ground water, subsidence phenomena has reached more than 20 cm/year in coastal areas.
The exact localisation of subsidence areas permits preventive measures to be taken in the most affected areas.
