CASE STUDY: GEOEPIDEMIOLOGY IN SENEGAL (CNES)
![]() |
Objective of the project
The project objective is to map pools of water in order to monitor risk zones affected by the Rift Valley Fever (rural area of Senegal) and Malaria (urban area of Dakar). The French Space Agency and Altamira Information collaborate to promote space assets in the health domain. |
Analysis and results
The study is conducted in Senegal on two sites: the village of Barkedji and the city of Dakar.
The epidemics studied are transmitted by mosquitoes that thrive in areas of water and their borders.
In the rainy season, only radar data provide images of the area (due to the cloud cover) and the high resolution of TerraSAR-X allow to analyse the pools dynamics and to establish links with the Zone Potentially Occupied by Mosquitoes (ZPOM, CNES patent pending).
During the rainy season, radar images allow to exhaustively map water areas and contribute to the generation of risk maps to minimise the impact of epidemics.
