CASE STUDY: HEAVY OIL RESERVOIR MONITORING (CONCEPT)

Objective of the project
The objective is to optimise oil extraction efficiency using steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) oil recovery technique.
The detection of ground movements contributes to minimise risks for nearby infrastructure due to steam injection.

Analysis and results

In SAGD sites, the injection of steam into the ground can result in:

=> Uplift: Indicator of potential steam excess  => risk for nearby infrastructure (red circles)

=>  Subsidence: Indicator of limited steam injection and/or potential reservoir compaction as consequence of extraction activities (blue circles)

Ground motion measurement contributes to optimise enhanced oil extraction
by detecting uplift and subsidence.
