CASE STUDY: EARTHQUAKE IN L'AQUILA (ITALY)

Objective of the project:
ALTAMIRA INFORMATION analysed ground deformation caused by the earthquake that affected the region of Abruzzo (Italy) on April 6th, 2009, in order to help better understand the mechanism of the seismic activity and to identify zones that are vulnerable to secondary effects, such as landslides.

Analysis and results

The project was conducted with Envisat images.

ALTAMIRA INFORMATION contributed to the European Commission's SAFER project (Services and Applications for Emergency Response) by providing millimetric measurements of ground deformation caused by the earth-quake in L'Aquila.

In the figure, at least 9 fringes (complete cycles of colour) can be counted, which are equivalent to a minimum displacement of 25cm.

Availability of pre- and post-earthquake satellite images permits the monitoring of terrain displacements before and after the event. These results are crucial to further understanding the dynamics of these phenomena.
